琼脂糖商品名很多，常见的有，Sepharose（瑞典，pharmacia ），Bio-Gel-A（美国Bio-Rad）等。琼脂糖凝胶是依靠糖链之间的次级链如氢键来维持网状结构，网状结构的疏密依靠琼脂糖的浓度。一般情况下，它的结构是稳定的，可以在许多条件下使用（如水，pH4-9范围内的盐溶液）。琼脂糖凝胶在40℃以上开始融化，也不能高压消毒，可用化学灭菌活处理。
琼脂糖 Agarose，缩写为AG，是琼脂中不带电荷的中性组成成份，也译为琼胶素或琼胶糖。琼胶糖化学结构由β-D-吡喃半乳糖(1-4)连接3,6-脱水α-L-吡喃半乳糖基单位构成.
把琼脂糖，即几乎不含硫酸根的主要成分为多糖的琼脂，溶于热水，冷却制成的凝胶。制成的小颗粒用于凝胶过滤。适于用sephadex不能分级分离的大分子的凝胶过滤，若使用5%以下浓度的凝胶，也能够分级分离细胞颗粒、病毒等。利用其吸附性小的特点，有时用它代替琼脂、以作为免疫电泳或凝胶内沉降反应的支持物。

There are many trade names, such as Sepharose (Sweden, Pharmacia), bio gel-a (US bio RAD), etc. Agarose gel relies on secondary chains such as hydrogen bonds to maintain the network structure. The density of the network depends on the concentration of agarose. In general, its structure is stable and can be used under many conditions (such as water, salt solution in the range of ph4-9). Agarose gel begins to melt at more than 40 degrees and can not be sterilized by high pressure. It can be treated by chemical sterilization.

Agarose, abbreviated as Ag, is a neutral component of agar without charge. It is also translated as agarose or agarose. The chemical structure of agarose consists of β - D-galactopyranosyl (1-4) linked 3,6-dehydrated α - l-galactopyranosyl units

Agarose, which is almost the main component of the sulfate free polysaccharide, is a polysaccharide agar dissolved in hot water and cooled to make the gel. Small particles made are used for gel filtration. It is suitable for gel filtration of macromolecules which can not be fractionated by Sephadex. If the gel is less than 5%, it can also be used for fractionation of cell particles and viruses. It is sometimes used instead of agar as a support for immune electrophoresis or gel sedimentation reaction because of its small adsorption characteristics.
